‘Get’ Drawing – new experimental drawing course for the terrified!

‘Get’ drawing –

A series of experimental workshops for the scared, for the rusty who would like to revisit drawing , for anyone who would enjoy an adventure in making a mark and maybe a different approach to making art.

The emphasis will be on process rather than outcome, enjoying the journey, freeing up ideas, spontaneity and personal expression.

We will begin with a discussion about what drawing is for and what are our expectations when we draw.   At primary school we enjoyed drawing and painting, and then for some people something terrible happens and drawing becomes difficult and out of reach.

We hope that you will be open to adventure and to experimenting without judgement. The drawings might not be representational in commonly accepted ideas of drawing, however we will start by observing objects and hopefully bring more of ourselves into the work, more of our own creativity and more enjoyment.

Simple materials will be provided – charcoal, pencils, chalk, ink, good quality paper and drawing boards.  If you have your own favourite drawing tools please bring them, as well as an open mind and willingness to explore.

Biography

The course will be run by Penny Somerville, formerly a Principal Lecturer at Glyndwyr University in North Wales. She was course leader for the Applied Arts degree and programme leader for the Architectural Glass strand.   She has experience in teaching at all levels from primary age children n India and in the Uk as well as undergraduates and postgraduates students who needed a fluency in drawing to develop design ideas.  She is a passionate believer in the notion that everyone can draw  – but most are hampered by the unhelpful negative inner critic.

Her practice since retiring to Devon has concentrated on furthering  her drawing practice, painting and becoming a printmaker specialising in etching.
